As it often happens, several ideas came together
on this carving. For the sale, I wanted to do an original
piece in a scene. Then I saw a picture of a guy taking
an eye test, and it struck a chord with me since, as much
I hate to admit it, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve had to start
wearing cheater glasses when I read or carve. So, I guess
the carving represents my empathy for this poor guy who’s
obviously struggling to read the chart. The caption on the
carving says, “Hey Doc, do you have one in English.”

"Old West Cowboy Chess Set"
Over the years I have carved more than a
dozen chess sets but never have learned how to play chess.
Some people find that surprising. But when I see a chess
set with a dozen different figures, I feel it lends itself
to carving, especially caricature carving. Living in western
South Dakota with its western history and cattle ranching,
I find a cowboy theme to be a natural. Every piece has a
story to tell, and I hope everyone enjoys the story as much
as I enjoyed carving it.
Size: Board is 18"x18"x 3/4". Pieces are approx
2 1/2" to 3 1/2"

"Ebeneezer Jack"
Ebeneezer Jack is a little bit of a departure
from my typical ten inch caricatures. Jack is a nearly twice
as tall at twenty inches. He is dressed in 1880's style with
stove top boots, spurs, and reinforced riding pants. His
stance appears ready to draw as if he has just been alerted
to danger. Included in the scene is some prickly pear cactus
and rocks. I thought about naming him Cactus Jack but that
seemed too common so he became Ebeneezer Jack.

"El Guardia"
I wanted to do a carving of a southwest
figure. The piece was originally a bit more round, but
I had to slim him down some to make the shotgun fit. The
result was leaner, meaner figure.
