David,
a resident of Burnsville, NC, began carving in 1984. He
had drawn and painted pictures all of his life. He is a
self-taught artist. He designs and creates his original
carvings from memories of his days growing up in the mountains
of North Carolina. He says, “I like to carve scenes
that show life as it should be.” His carvings have
won many first place awards including several “Best of
Show” “Show Theme,” and “People’s
Choice.” People say they identify his carvings by his style
of soft, muted painting technique. He is prolific in many art
mediums—painting, animal, bird, Santa, caricature walking
sticks, and realistic carvings. He also does some blacksmithing
in his blacksmith shop to carry on the tradition of his famous
relatives, The Boone’s. David is retired and enjoys being
with family and friends. He has a life size carving of
Big Tom Wilson, a famous mountaineer, in the Mount Mitchell State
Park Museum.
He is a member
of the National Woodcarvers Association and the Southern Highland
Handicraft Guild. He has been featured in Chip Chats, and
several books.
David has won
Best of Caricatures twice at the International Woodcarvers Congress
in Davenport, Iowa. He has won several first place division
awards at the International Woodcarvers Congress. He has won
Best of Show at the Dayton Woodcarvers Show, Best of Show at
the Cincinnati Woodcarvers Show, Best of Show several times at
the Charlotte NC Woodcarvers Show, Best of Show at the Greenville,

and Best of Show at the Kansas City Woodcarvers Show and Best
