Bob was a retired Professor of Agronomy at the University of California, Davis. He carved for over 30 years. Early in his carving journey he explored several carving styles, but he soon focused on caricature carving. He especially enjoyed the humor in caricature work and was always delighted when his carvings brought a smile to observers.
Bob was a founding member of The Caricature Carvers of America (CCA). He was active in CCA duties, serving his first term as president in the mid-1990s and later being elected to a second term in 2003. He served as the project editor for “Carving the Full Moon Saloon” and “Carving the CCA Circus,” both of which are highlighted on the CCA website.
Bob instructed at the Doane Experience in Crete, Nebraska beginning in 1990. In addition, he taught seminars at numerous locations around the country. His teaching philosophy was simple. He first identified the skill level of each carver in his class and then worked to help each person move to a new level. His approach was to describe concepts with the aid of sketches, demonstrate on an in-class carving, and then work one-on-one with each student. His two-day or weekend seminars typically focused on the caricature face, often using a small head-and-bust project. His longer seminars focused on full-figure carvings. All of his projects were challenging and based on band-sawn blanks.
Bob also served as a judge at numerous carving shows, including multiple times at the Idaho Carvers Guild show in Boise, the Grand Canyon Carving Show in Phoenix, the Middletown, Ohio show, and the Iron Mountain, Michigan show. He led the judging team at the second and third Annual CCA National Caricature Carving Competition at Dollywood in 2003 and 2004.
Bob spent much of his free time in his carving studio in Montana. When he was not in Montana, he was often back in California visiting old friends at the University and thinking about his beloved Montana.
