Jack is a retired commercial photographer living in Sun City West, Arizona. Photography was once a hobby for Jack until he discovered he could make a living doing what he enjoyed. He then needed a new hobby, so in 1973 he started carving wood by carving an eagle plaque from scrap lumber, not knowing that was not a recommended carving wood. Jack continued to carve birds competing at the Ward World Wildfowl Competition for ten years. His first exposure to caricature carving was a Harold Enlow class in 1988, which had a lasting effect on the direction of his carving. Jack still enjoys studying caricature carving with many great carvers not only to learn new skills but also being able to fellowship with interesting people and to have a fun time.
His artistic talents have been demonstrated with a third Best of Show in the first CCA National Caricature Carving Competition, a Best of Show at the Ward Wildfowl Carving Competition, a Best of Show at the Dayton Artistry in Wood Show, People’s and Carver’s Choice and Best of Wood Sculpture at Dollywood and Best of Division at the International Woodcarvers Congress. Jack also won first place in the Flex-Cut Tool Internet Carving Competition in 2001.
October 2006 marked the fifteenth year for Jack to coordinate the woodcarving show at Dollywood and the third year to coordinate the National Caricature Carving Competition and Exhibit which was also held at Dollywood. Jack became a member of the Caricature Carvers of America in 2003 and is also a founding member of Tennessee Carvers Guild. He now spends a great deal of time photographing carvings at shows and for friends and his photography appears frequently in many magazines on woodcarving and other subjects.
Along with Vic Hood, Jack co-authored both Carving Found Wood and Extreme Pumpkin Carving. Jack and Rick Jensen completed a book on carving whimsical bark houses titled Illustrated Guide to Carving Tree Bark and Carving Cypress Knees with Carole Jean Boyd. Fox Chapel published all four books.
Jack’s carvings are not available for sale.
